Toronto Triwizard Tournament, the First Task
If you had not of heard already, I have been selected to represent my University as Champion in a Triwizard Tournament, between the three Toronto schools. Friday night was the first task. I survived, barely, but survived nonetheless. Fortunately, I was able to claim my Golden Egg, which holds the clue for what the Second Task shall encompass. How I got that Golden Egg is certainly an adventurous story.
Yesterday evening, the other two Champions and I were driven out to a farm about half an hour from my school. The farm had a maze. We were told within the maze lied three Golden Eggs, one for each Champion, our objective was to retrieve the eggs and find our way back out of the maze. It seemed simple enough, yet that was hardly the case. You see, not only did we have to find our eggs, in the pitch black of and the biting cold of a late October evening, we also had to battle any creatures or obstacles we encountered on our way. However, being the enthusiastic young wizards and witch we are, we were ready to whatever may befall on us. We could not have backed out, the Goblet of Fire had chosen us, and us alone, and it was our duty to represent our schools with the best magical abilities we had within us. Unknowingly to us, we were about to embark on one of the most psychologically terrifying, mentally straining, and physically exhausting quests of our lives.
Around eight o’clock, we were taken to the entrance of the maze and told our objective. York University’s, my school, very own Minister of Magic stared us off, and with very little preparation, my preparation comprised of me scanning over spells the morning of, we entered the maze. For the first few moments all three of us champions stuck together until we came to a three way fork and had to all go our separate ways. After that it didn’t take long for me to run into my first obstacle. It was a dementor, luckily I had practiced my patronus charm and summoned up one of my happiest memory’s and fought it off. I continued on only to find a deatheater of whom I had to duel. My dueling skills were weak, it took me a while the defeat her, yet eventually I did and I was granted passage. It didn’t take me long to find a bridge, hoping to get a better view of the maze I climbed up its stairs only to find it was so dark I could not decipher which paths led where.
Disappointed, I continued on my way, and headed deeper and deeper into the maze, collecting objects for points as I went along. My pouch was pretty full when I encountered a sphinx and had to answer one of her riddles to pass. As difficult as it was I was able to uncover the answer and was allowed to pass, without her attacking and taking my objects. It was right after the first sphinx when I ran into Peeves the Poltergeist, who attacked me with his water gun and silly string. I ran at first going ever so deeper into the maze until it hit me how to scare Peeves off. I shouted “I’m going to call the Bloody Baron on you Peeves” and Peeves let out a scream and ran off. Proud of myself for only a second, it didn’t take to long for me to realise I was now lost. After about twenty minutes of being totally alone in the darkness of the maze I came across another sphinx. She would not let me answer her riddle without an egg, however she was nice enough to give me a useful clue; ‘follow the noise’. So I did. It took me a while, yet after running into a few more deatheaters, boggarts, dementors, and a Peeves a few more times, I finally found a pasture in the middle of the maze that was surrounded by deatheaters. Hidden in the pasture was a Golden Egg. Defeating one of the strongest deatheaters in a duel I was able to win my egg, an egg that took bloody ages to find, you cannot fathom how happy I was.
I doubled back towards the sphinx, this time sprinting through the maze, fighting off any more deatheaters and dementors that came my way. At one point I came across a large group of them and Peeves leaving the maze. Stupidly, I decided to follow them, hoping they would lead me to the exit. Then suddenly Peeves, realising what I was doing yelled; “Everyone attack Sam!” With this large group of dementors and deatheaters coming towards me, I bellowed “Expelliarmus”, and “Expecto Patronum” a few times, taking a couple out. However knowing I could not take them all, I clutched onto my egg and charged right through them, thankfully I survived, and eventually lost them.
With my hands tightly wrapped around my Golden Egg, I pressed on through the maze trying to figure out how to find the sphinx. Lost again, thanks to that large group of deatheaters acting on Peeves commands, it took me a while to find the sphinx. Finally I saw her, answering her riddle almost immediately, I sprinted past only to find another sphinx. This time I could not answer her riddle correctly and had to give her my pouch that was heavy with all the bonus items I had collected, in order to pass. I didn’t care too much; I knew the end was near. With my golden egg in hand I sprinted towards the exit.
Stepping through the exit, suddenly I heard a familiar voice yell “IMMOBULUS!” Frozen for a second, I was able to see it was the famous Bellatrix Lestrange who had cast the spell (it was actually my girlfriend, Laura, dressed as Bellatrix, which was a complete and utter surprise). It was down to a duel between Bellatrix and me in order to complete the task, a tremendously arduous duel, because Bellatrix was a far superior fighter than me. It was only because I shouted out the joke spell “BIGGUS DICKUS” causing Bellatrix to pause in confusion, that I won the duel. With Bellatrix stepping aside I finally I brought my Egg forth and completed the First Task. A task that was one of the most psychologically terrifying, mentally straining, and physically exhausting tasks I have ever done in my life.
I came out of the maze in second place, yet I not sure where I place in points yet since our Ministry still has to tally them up. I’m not too happy with second, however I did do my bloody best, and since mazes are really not my forte, even in daylight, it’s the bloody best I could do. With the clue for what will encompass in the Second Task hidden in the Golden Egg, a clue which I have already figured out, I know have to wait until February to ‘swim’ to my goal for first place.
